XFinity Series: Elliott shows the way at Richmond

Chase Elliott took his first lead two-thirds of the way through Friday’s race and it turned out to be his last lead of the night as the defending series champion showed the way for the final eighty-three laps to claim victory at Richmond International Raceway. With the win, Elliott pulled to within twenty-one points of series leader Chris Buescher entering the final two months of the season. Elliott’s margin of victory over runner-up Kyle Busch was one-point three seconds with Brian Scott, Joey Logano and Erik Jones completing the top five. Elliott snapped a thirty-nine race winless streak dating back to July 2014 and the victory was the first at R-I-R for an X-FINITY Series regular since 2004. Cup Series drivers had won twenty-two straight … Busch started from the pole, led the first forty-nine laps and seventy-eight in all … Buescher qualified thirteenth and finish tenth. Ty Dillon went into the weekend second in points but slipped to third after an eighth-place finish. He’s twenty-seven points behind Buescher entering the next race next weekend at Chicagoland Speedway … Daniel Suarez was the highest-finishing rookie, coming home in twelfth place … Friday’s race included just eight lead changes among six drivers: Elliott, Busch, Scott, Ryan Ellis, Regan Smith and rookie Ross Chastain.
